Salvation Mountain : GOD IS LOVE

When I found out  I was going to be going to be in Palm Springs for a short vacation after teaching a craft workshop in San Diego ( more on that soon )  the one place I wanted to visit was Salvation Mountain . I honestly did not know much history of the mountain. After seeing  many  photos on social I knew I too wanted to see it in person and learn more about the famous painted mountain.

My mom and I  drove a little over an hour  from our resort in Palm Springs. I wanted to arrive during the sunset hour so I could capture some photos without the intense sun.

Salvation Mountain is located in the middle of a small community near Slab city just miles from the Salton Sea.  On our way I did some google research on the area and the Salton Sea.  As we drove next to The Salton sea almost the entire trip I learned it is one of the largest inland seas. The sea is 45 miles long and 25 miles wide.

As we got closer to the mountain I was getting worried our GPS was getting us lost. We traveled down a gravel road to the mountain making a few turns . We pulled into a very small community with housing sitting on a road right next to the mountain. There in the distance we spotted the colorful mountain, the excitement of being there began.

When we arrived, there was only a couple other girls visiting whom left shortly after we arrived. We had the entire mountain to ourselves for about 30 minutes.

It was more then I ever expected.

Salvation Mountain is Leonard’s tribute to God and his gift to the world with his simple but powerful message “God Is Love ” .

Throughout the mountain many messages and  scriptures were created including the Lords Prayer, John 3:16 , and the sinners prayer.

The mountain is 50 foot in height and 150 foot breadth and is made totally of local adobe clay and donated paint ..

At the bottom of the mountain were trucks and cars fully painted with scripture verses and paintings .
