painting sticks for the birds - DIY bird feeder

As we walked around the lake at the park, soaking in the summer day my hands quickly became overflowed with picked up drift wood sticks. I asked the girls what they had planned to do with these sticks. Of course neither of them had an answer.

My fist thought was to paint them. I have seen so many great DIY for painted sticks on pinterest. But then I thought, what would the girls do with these sticks once we had painted them, beside create a extra pile in their room.

The sticks came home with us. After lunch we packed up supplies and headed to the studio for a fun crafty afternoon to make bird ladder feeders.

bird1To start, I had the girls section off their sticks with tape. There was no specific pattern except one side of the stick needed to be left unpainted. I also explained to them that wherever there was tape, the wood would stay raw.

After the paint had dried, we wrapped small sections with yarn, creating a texture to the sticks. To keep the yarn sticking and holding tight to the wood, we used a small amount of hot glue.

bird6After we finished wrapping with yarn we began tying them together like a ladder with twine. This part of the project will require adult help, if you are making this with younger kids. The tricky part is getting all the sticks level.

Now that the sticks are strung together , cover the end of the sticks with a thin coat of peanut butter. Once the PB is spread evenly cover with bird seed.

To finish, create a twine loop for the top stick. This will be used to hang from the tree!! Super fun and easy.

Once we got home we hung the feeder to the tree and patiently waited for the birds. I love creating projects that are both fun and educational with kids. I think there will be a lot of bird watching this summer.
